Welcome to my beer blog
Beer’s great isn’t it?
A mate and I were at a beer festival soaking up a few bevvies and its vibrant atmosphere. While sporting the most infectious grin, Pete turned to me and said “I’m so happy! Look at all these people here to celebrate beer. Beer’s great isn’t it?” He’s right, beer IS wonderful! I love it and assume you do too, which is why you’re here. This is what beer drinkers do, we share our love of beer. Welcome to my beer blog.
Times are a’changin’
Today we’re living through a Golden Age of Beer, one characterised by change and choice. The industry has gone through a renaissance after the carnage caused of 60s to early 90s. With so many options to hand, now is the time to learn and experiment from what’s on offer and tell each other about it. Beer and beer festivals have shaken off yesteryear’s image. No longer do they attract only herds of bearded middle-aged men in sandals toting black notebooks. Nowadays you will see a more diverse crowd involved in the modern beer scene than 20 years ago. The current scene is more inclusive, discerning, challenging, fun. Memorable, flavoursome ales, that’s what we want. When do we want them? Now!
And what about now? Well, beer fans do far more than just visit their local boozers or the odd CAMRA Festival. They:
- arrange social gatherings and Twissups,
- use social media to exchange recommendations, organise beer swaps and place real-time orders as stock hits shop shelves and ales hit the bar,
- take an active part in the beer industry as consumers and reviewers,
- attend meet the brewers events for special tastings and Q & A sessions,
- partake in beer tourism breaks home and abroad,
- place online orders for exotic beers from around the world,
- decide on the best food/beer pairing combinations when out for a meal or cooking/dining at home.
Sharing the message about beer involves making connections. During an evening in my local I seized the opportunity to give away one of my contact cards. The all-seeing landlord wryly commented on my elevation to ‘Professional Beer Drinker’ status! Well, the truth is I’m an average drinking punter like most of you. A drinker unaffiliated to any brewery and beer organisation, one equipped with an open mind and taste palate, willing to explore the heady and booming beer culture all around us. Like other beer bloggers, I share via the usual channels – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and here.
I look for beers full of flavour and track down exciting new finds and distinctive examples that stand out. I call it ‘chasing the flagon’. You never know, the next new beer could become a future firm favourite. A chanced upon bar may turn into a regular haunt. Enjoying of a new beer style may open up avenues of appreciation for many years to come. If you look at today’s beer scene you’ll know the possibilities appear endless.
Consequently, my beer stash contains brews from all over the world and covers the spectrum of styles. My niche is beers from Northern England and those from Belgium, especially lambics, oud bruins and Flanderan reds. So, please browse around my beer blog, read whatever sparks your interest and then start the flow … ask questions, engage in discussion, swap ideas, offer recommendations. Beer is universally loved and its drinkers gladly share stories and time with other like-minded souls. I’m in for the long haul. Stay with me until the binder, OK?

My beer blog, Views From The Bar is a virtual pub table. It’s a venue where we can trade stories of the places we’ve visited on our beer travels, a place to make friends and be friends. Now that we’ve handled the introductions, let’s talk about beer!
